As a consultant, sometimes you focus so much on a client that you do not have time to keep up-to-date with SAP updates. I know it does not just happen to me. I have noticed that many talk about SAP HANA but only very few of us actually know what it is. For this reason I have put together this quick recap on what SAP HANA and SAP S/4 HANA really are.
What is SAP HANA?
It’s an In-Memory Database. Like any database, it contains data but it also incorporates the calculation function, which was previously located in the Application Layer. This allows for the calculations to run over the database much faster.

What is SAP S/4 HANA?
SAP S/4 Hana or SAP Suite for Hana is NOT a database. It is a Business Suite* that has been created specifically to work over the SAP HANA database, which further improves operational systems.
Evolution of Business Suite
SAP S/4 HANA does not come alone. This Business Suite works with SAP Fiori, a tool designed to create friendlier working interfaces. This tool improves the UX or User Experience by providing more intuitive screens, which can be customized according to the type of end user (department area, type of controller…) and also it has the ability to display whichever piece of information we choose.
